Paris: De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1761.

Magnificent royal edition of Jean de Joinville's history of King Louis IX, crusader and saint. Joinville's history is followed by the annals of William of Nangis, as well as an account of Louis' life and miracles by the confessor of Queen Marguerite, William of St. Pathus. This is the true first edition of the text, maintaining the original medieval spelling and grammar; all previous editions of the text had been modernized for publication. Joinville is one of the greatest French historians of the Crusades; he fought with King Louis in the Middle East, and after the death of the king was one of the witnesses during the canonization process. Joinville made use of Nangis' chronicle, which was an important source medieval French history. This fine royal edition was produced on heavy high quality paper with wide margins throughout. Besides the royal engraved device on the title-page, there are also several fine engraved vignettes throughout. The narratives listed above are followed by extracts, translated into French, taken from Arabic manuscripts relative to the crusades and St. Louis. There is also a very copious glossary at the end of the work. Large Folio(42 x 26 cm), xxii + 558 pp. + clxxxiii + 2 folding maps. Beautifully bound in full calf by Larmandieu, black borders with gilt fleur-de-lis, gilt stamped design on center of covers, gilt spine, black morocco label on spine. All edges red. Front joint repaired, new endpapers, light circular stain to front cover together with a few other slight spots, minor wear and/or bumping to extremities. Book-plate and owner's inscription to verso of front endpaper. Title-page lightly toned, small lower marginal tear to pages 247-8, light stain to pages 436-7, otherwise clean and fresh throughout. A very handsome book in very good condition. [Cohen-deRicci 518; Olivier 2443]
